Description
Rare Shells of Taiwan In Color
by
T.C. Lan
No ISBN , copyright and published in Taiwan by T.C.Lan in 1980, hardcover cloth bound with applied gold leaf lettering, originally with a printed paper dust jacket, page size is 8.5 by 11 inches or about 21 by 28 cm., 144 pages, illustrated with color photographs of many shells, some unusual
shell-craft
and some ancient Chinese "Cowrie" money. The book is bilingual in English and in Chinese
This book is now also rare and it is a remarkable achievement and a labor of love by the author who was at this time the leading shell dealer and shell expert in Taiwan. The shells that he has to illustrate are among the rarest shells found in Taiwan pretty much at the time that Taiwan was the center of the shell world. Today many of these shells are common and many are still exceedingly rare, but this book is a time capsule of was happening in the world of shells in Taiwan at that time. One plate is devoted to the famous stone cowrie money of ancient China and a few others show shells used as objects for decoration in China. This is a used a library copy withdrawn from the Smithsonian Libraries and has their cancelled stamp on the front title page. It also has the remains of a library circulation envelope inside the front cover as well as a place where a catalog label was glued to the inside of the cover. The dust jacket is missing but the book is a very elaborately produced one. It has a cloth cover with gilt leaf lettering. The book autographed by Lan with an inscription to its' original owner, M.E. Young who was a shell dealer in Virginia at the time the book was published. For a while I was able to get many copies of this book but this is the first one that I've had in many years. It is now as rare as are so many of the shells you'll find in the book. We were able to get a bargain price on this copy and we're passing the savings on to you. The last copies I had were sold at $119.95
